A man has been killed on a beach in Sydney after being bitten by a Big Shark suspect, Australian police in South Wales said.

In a statement, police said emergency services removed the man from the morning surf on the shore of Long Reef Beach – but he “died on the spot”.

“Two sections of the surf board have been restored and taken for an expert exam,” the message said.

The incident on Saturday led to a series of closure in the popular zone known as the northern beaches.

State police said the emergency services had acted after receiving reports shortly after 10:00 local time on Saturday (00:00 GMT) that “a man has suffered critical injuries.”

The victim’s identity was yet to be confirmed.

Local police officers and experts will work together to “determine the types of shark”.
