Police said suspect Vance Luther Bolter was armed during his arrest

A 57-year-old man has been arrested in the US state of Minnesota on suspicion of killing a deputy from a democratic state and her husband.

The arrest on Sunday night was the culmination of a huge two -day Mannth after the death of Melissa Hortman, a Democrat from Minnesota and her husband Mark. State Governor Tim Walz called him “politically motivated murder”.

Police said Vance Luther Belter was armed during his arrest in a rural area west of Minneapolis, but surrendered peacefully when he had caused it.

It is also alleged that he also shot a wounded senator of a democratic state, John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who are both awake in hospital.

Hofman said on Sunday that they both felt “incredibly lucky to be alive” because they were hit by 17 bullets between them.

She and her husband were “gutted and devastated” by Hortmans’ death, G -Ja Hofman added in her statement. “We have no words,” she wrote. “There is never room for this kind of political hatred.”

Mr. Bolter is faced with two second-degree murder accusations and two charges of attempting second-degree murder. He has to appear in court in Minneapolis at 1:30 pm local time (14:30 edt; 18:30 GMT) on Monday.

The suspect is a former politically appointed and once was a member of the same State Council for the development of the workforce as John Hoffman. However, it is unclear whether they are actually known.

Police did not imagine what the motive of the alleged killer might be, but state senator Amy Klobuchar joined the governor Walz, suggesting that the attacks were politically motivated.

Officials said on Sunday that Vance Luther Belter was detained after investigators discovered a car he used in Sibli County, about 50 miles (80 km) from the scene of the murder in Brooklyn Park.

Air and Swat teams were located to arrest suspects after a huge Manh, which was described as the largest in Minessota history.

During his arrest, no police officers were injured and officers said they were not looking for other suspects. Mr. Boelter’s wife was previously detained when traffic stopped, but was released because she collaborated with investigators.

By speaking at a press conference with other local employees on Sunday night, governor Walz said the attack was an “indescribable act” that “changed the state of Minnesota”.

“This cannot be the norm. This cannot be the way we deal with our political differences,” Walz said.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey praised the “skill and courage” of law enforcement after the arrest of a suspect. “Political violence is disgusting,” he added.

Vance Luther Bolter has been charged with presenting a police officer to make the attacks on Saturday before exchanging the fire with police officers and escapes from the suburban area.

Melissa Hortman had served in the House of Representatives of Minnesota for 20 years and was chairman of the House from 2019 to 2025.

In addition to having some political participation, Boelter is a security performer and a religious missionary who has worked in Africa and the Middle East, his autobiography says. According to Facebook photos, he once preached as a church pastor in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Investigators have been reported to have found a list of “goals” in the vehicle, which is thought to have driven out for the alleged shooting.

Drew Evans, Head of the Criminal Retention Bureau in Minnesota, told reporters that he would not describe the notebook found in the car as a “manifesto” as this is not a “treatise for all kinds of ideology and writings.”

Local media reported that the names include governor Walz, Congress Ilhan Omar and Minnesota Keith Ellison Prosecutor General.

During the Sunday press conference, Evans did not specify who was included in the list, but said the civil servants had contacted the authorities in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska and Iowa so that they could “inform the people who are on this list”.

G -Ja Hoffman’s statement on Sunday also offered an update to her husband’s condition. “John withstands many operations right now and is twilight every hour to be out of the forest,” she writes.

The attacker is believed to be first aimed at Hofmans – at their home in Champlin, around 2:00 local time on Saturday.

A Facebook post by someone who identifies herself as a nephew of Gi Hoffman, said she had thrown herself on her daughter during a murder attempt, “using her body as a shield to save her life.”

Shortly after the attack on Hoffmans eight miles, Hortmans was shot dead and killed at their home in Brooklyn Park.

The locals told the BBC about their shock. Taha Abusssen, who lives on the other side of the street, said he and his wife have known Hortman’s family for more than 20 years.

“They were very pleasant neighbors in a very quiet neighborhood,” he said. “You don’t see police activity in this neighborhood. We’re very shocked.”

Another resident said she and her husband received an annual Christmas card from Hortmans.

“What a big loss for Minnesota,” she said.
