The cardinals will meet next month in a secret conclave to choose the next pope, the Vatican said.

The closed -door meeting will start inside the Sistine Chapel on May 7 and will include about 135 cardinals around the world.

The death of Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88 at Easter on Monday and whose funeral took place on Saturday.

There is no time for how long it will take to choose the next pope, but the previous two conclusions held in 2005 and 2013 have lasted only two days.

Vatican spokesman Mateo Bruni said that the cardinals will participate in a solemn liturgy in the St. Peter Basilica, after which those who meet the conditions will gather in the Sistine Chapel for the secret vote.

Once they enter the Sistine Chapel, the Cardinals should not have communication with the outside world until a new pope is selected.

There is only one circle of vote on the first afternoon, but the cardinals will vote up to four times each day after that.

A new pope requires a majority of two -thirds – and it can take time.

Each cardinal votes on a simple card, which says in Latin: “I choose as a supreme Ponif,” to which they add the name of their chosen candidate.

If the conclave ends their third day without deciding, the cardinals can pause for a day of prayer.

Outside the Sistine Chapel, the world will look at the chimney smoke.

If the smoke is black, there will be another circle of voting. White smoke signals that a new pope has been selected.
