A former Thai police chief, who was imprisoned for life three years ago to torment drugs suspected of death, was found dead in prison in Bangkok, authorities said.
Thitisan Uthanaphon, which was called Joe Ferrari because of his numerous luxury cars, died of suicide, according to a preliminary autopsy.
In 2021, a leaking video showed that Thitisan and his colleagues wrapped plastic bags around the head of a 24-year-old suspect drug during interrogation, leading to the death of a suspect.
The video caused national outrage at that time because of the police brutality in Thailand. He made new circles on social media after the death of Thitisant.
The Thailand Ministry of Justice has begun an investigation into his death after his family expressed doubts that he committed suicide. Additional tests were needed to confirm that he had indeed died in suicide, authorities said.
Justice Minister Taui Sodson said on Monday that all evidence related to Thitisant’s death should be disclosed and called on prison authorities to cooperate with investigators.
The family said that had previously been attacked by a prison employee. They said that employees did not allow them to see his body, which was found in his cell on Friday.
But on Sunday, authorities said “no prisoner or prisoner had harmed or caused (his) death.”
A previous attack at the Thidenceant House revealed that he owns a dozen luxury sports cars. Authorities believe he owned at least 42, one of them is a rare Lamborghini Aventador Anniversario, of which only 100, priced in Thailand at $ 47 million ($ 1.45 million; $ 1.05 million).
As a police colonel, Thitisant was paid about $ 1,000 a month.
He had claimed that he asked for bribes from suspects in the viral video jiirapong Tanapat while he was suffocating him. Thitisant denied this.
Thitisant surrendered in 2021 after manipulation.
In addition to THISISANT, five other police officers were sentenced to JeiPong murder and were also sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022.
“It is as if he had paid Karma he had done,” Jirapong’s father said in an interview with local media on Saturday.
The Ministry of Correction said they had investigated a previous complaint filed by the Thidenceant family claiming that he was harassed and attacked by prison officials this year.
Thitisant consulted with doctors on anxiety problems and sleep problems, the department said.
His family visited him on the day he died and prison staff did not notice any “anomalies”, the message said.
