A police officer was killed by injuries suffered while responding to firing outside the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is near Emori University.
The Atlanta Police Department said the incident, which took place on Friday, was associated with a “one shooter”, which is now dead.
Police identifies the officer killed as 33-year-old David Rose, who had two children with a third on the way, Reports CBS News to the US partner of BBCS He was shot and taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries.
There are no reports of civil injuries as a result of the shooting, said the mayor of the city of Atlanta.
The US media, citing an unnamed law enforcement officer, reports a theory that the alleged shooter believes he is ill as a result of a coronavirus vaccine.
Media reports also suggest that the man’s father called the law enforcement agencies on the day of the shooting, believing that his son was suicide.
CDC director Susan Monres said the center was “broken by the heart” by the attack.
“A brave local order employee gave his life and another was injured after a weapon opened a fire of at least four CDC buildings,” she wrote in an X.
“Police at Dekalb County, CDC’s security and EMORY University responded immediately and decisively, helping to prevent the more damage to our staff and community.”
At a briefing at the press given on Friday, police said they had learned of an active shooter report around 16:50 local time (21:50 BST) on the way to the “immediately” in front of the CDC campus.
Multiple agencies have responded, including federal and state partners, police added.
The University of Emori published at that time on social media: “An active shooter on Emori Atlanta’s campus in Emory Point CVS. Run, hide, fight.”
CDC Campus received multiple rounds of firing in buildings.
Police said they had discovered the shooter “hit by shooting” on the second floor of a CVS pharmacy at the intersection – but could not specify on Friday whether it was from the law enforcement authorities or alone.
Shelter shelter was raised about an hour and a half after the shooting announcement, according to CBS News.
Since then, the police department said it has “no constant threat” to the campus or the surrounding neighborhood.
The media reported that CDC employees were asked to work remotely on Monday.
