x/@PetrogustavoTwo Colombian Air Force aircraft sent to the United States to bring deported migrants have landed in the capital, Bogota.
Migrants were on US military flights aimed at Colombia on Sunday, when Colombian President Gustavo Petroleum banned the US military aircraft from landing, arguing that those on board were being treated as criminals.
The incident took the two sides to the edge of a trade war after Donalddersep threatened to impose 25% of Colombian goods tariffs, and Petro said he would take revenge in kind.
Diplomats from both sides have reached a deal that saw Colombia send its own aircraft aircraft to gather migrants, a process that Petro said that he guaranteed that they were treated “dignity”.
“They are Colombians, free and worthy in their homeland, where they are loved,” he wrote to X.
He also posted pictures of migrants who descend from the plane without handcuffs.
x/@PetrogustavoTreatment of US military flights seemed to be at the center of spitting between the two governments.
Colombia has accepted deportation flights from the US in the past: in 2024, 124 aircraft carrying deported migrants from the United States landed in the country.
But in one of his posts on X on Sunday, Petro refers to a news video showing migrants deported from the United States to Brazil, who were handcuffed and restrained their legs during the deportation flight.
The Colombian leader said “will never allow the Colombians to be handcuffed on flights.”
Petro’s refusal to allow US military aircraft to anger President Trump, who is a promise to eliminate illegal migrants from the United States through “mass deportations”.
Trump directed his administration “immediately” to hit 25% rates for all Colombian goods entering the United States, which he believes will increase to 50% in a week.
He also imposed visa restrictions and other sanctions, in what many observers believe it was an attempt to send a message to other countries for cooperation or facing serious consequences.
State Department spokesman Tammy Bruce told Fox News on Monday that “it’s a reminder of Colombia, that there is a price you have to pay if you go against your agreements, things you promise.”
The US Embassy in Bogota has canceled hundreds of visa meetings on Monday and Tuesday.
The Colombians arriving at the gates were awarded letters that told them that the cancellation was due to the decline of the Colombian government to accept the repatriation flights of Colombian citizens, “the Associated Press reports.
EPAUS officials had said earlier that visa restrictions would not be canceled until migrants, which were turned on Sunday, did not land in Colombia.
Neither the US nor the Colombian government provided details of the deal that defined the situation.
White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt writes in a statement that “the Government of Colombia has agreed to all President Trump’s conditions, including the unlimited acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia, completed by the United States, including US military aircraft without restriction or delay “.
Meanwhile, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murilo said the “impasse” with Washington was “overcome”.
Murilo added that his government would continue to receive Colombian deported in “decent conditions”.
It is currently unclear whether Colombia will continue to send airplanes to the Air Force to the United States to collect deported migrants or whether the two fields on Tuesday were one -off.
Leaders in Central and South America are expected to discuss how to deal with the Trump Administration’s migration policy at a summit convened by Honduras as a result of Colombia-Joint.
President Petro has already confirmed his presence.
