Air India confirmed that one of his flights was forced to turn last week after plastic bags, rags and clothes closed most of their toilets, leaving many of their 300 passengers in discomfort.
The aircraft headed from Chicago to the Indian capital, Delhi – 14 hours of drugs – spent nearly two hours in the air before returning to the US city.
Videos from the aircraft showed scenes of confusion as the passengers huddled around the crew members who seem to explain the situation.
The incident sparked a lively debate on social media, with many Indians weighing on an airplane label in the bathroom.
Airplane toilets store human waste in special tanks and use a vacuum washing system. They are usually discarded after the plane has landed.
While clogged toilets are not uncommon, it is “to the impossible” all toilets to break up “because of the guilt only of the passengers and in a way that it causes an emergency deviation,” said Mark Martin, an aviation expert told Hindustan Times.
The incident took place at the Air India Flight 126 on March 5, but the airline released a statement on Monday explaining what happened.
It says that he had previously found objects like blankets, domestic clothing and diapers, struck his toilets.
“We use this opportunity to urge passengers to use toilets only for the purposes for which they are intended,” the message said.
In the statement, the airline said that eight of its 12 business toilets in business and economic class fell apart after the crew members found polyethylene bags, rags and clothes that were red and stuck in the water pipelines.
He released some pictures showing bags containing waste cleaned of toilets. A photo showed a crew member holding a drainage pipe completely stuffed with what looked like rags.
Due to the night restrictions of most European airports at that time, the airline said it could not divert the fields elsewhere – turning the return to Chicago the only option.
“After landing in Chicago, all the passengers and crew descended normally and were provided with accommodation to minimize the inconvenience,” said a spokesman for the company, adding that the deviation decision was made “entirely in the interest of passengers’ comfort and safety.”
The airline added that it offers passengers full recovery and deferred flights.
Many have criticized the airline for poor maintenance and the lack of sanitary facilities on their planes.
“Only Air India has such frequent accidents. Honestly, what has happened is indefinitely,” a user said.
But others said that the airline could not be responsible for the situation.
“Can we honestly throw all the wines at Air India and the crew when people can’t follow a major travel label?” Another user said.
