An AI Model for the Brain Is Coming to the ICU

Cleveland clinic San Francisco-based startup Pyramidal is partnershiping to develop a large size AI model that will be used to monitor patients’ brain health in intensive care units.

Instead of being trained on the text, the system is based on the electronsphlogram (EEG) data, which is collected through the electrodes placed on the skin of the head and then read in a series of wave lines by a computer. The EEG records the brain’s electrical activity and the changes in this activity may indicate a problem. In the ICU setting, physicians scan EEG data for itching, changing consciousness or brain activity.

Currently, physicians depend on continuous EEG observation to detect the abnormal brain activity of ICU patients, but they cannot observe each individual patient in real time. Instead, EEG reports are usually generated every 12 or 24 hours and are then analyzed to determine if a patient is feeling nervous problems. Manually it can take two to four hours to review the valuable brainwave data of any day.

Chris Pahuza, chief product officer of the Pyramidal, said, “Our model plays the role of constantly monitoring patients in the ICU and what is happening to patients and how their brain health is being developed in real time.”

Pahuza and CEO Dimitris Fotis Socialy also founded the pyramidal in 2021, with the goal of creating a foundation model for the brain – an AI system that could read and explain broadly neural signals among different people. Earlier, Soclerio spent 15 years as a neurozinier and AI scientist by researching the EEG. Pahuza worked on Google and Spotify product techniques. Their startup, which is supported by the Wi -combinator, has collected millions of dollars for the seed fund last year.

The company has created its ICU brain model using Cleveland Clinic and other partnership -owned EEG data using the universally available EEG datasets. Saclerio says that the model is both neurological and unhealthy both healthy and unhealthy “thousands of thousands” patients have included EEG observation data for about a million hours. Brain activity patterns are extremely variable from person to person, so creating a foundation model of the brain requires a lot of data to capture common patterns and features.

Currently, the Cleveland Clinic and the Pyramidal Team are using the previous patient data to make the model subtle. Within the next six to eight months, they plan to test the model in a tightly controlled ICU environment with live patients and limited number of beds and physicians. From there, they aim to slowly roll out the software throughout the ICU. In the end, the software will allow the hospital system to monitor hundreds of patients at once, Nazam said.
