An officer killed in rural property

A 57-year-old Australian police officer was shot dead in rural property in Tasmania while serving an order to return home, police say.

The employee arrived at a house in northern Moton, near the town of Ulversstone, on Monday morning when he was fired by a “public member,” a police report in Tasmania said.

A second police officer returned a fire by injuring the suspect’s hand. The suspect gave up and later received hospital treatment, police said.

Deadly shoots remain rare in Australia, which has strict weapons laws.

After the shooting on Monday, a crime scene was created in northern Moton and the coroner was notified, a police spokesman said, adding that “there is no constant threat to the public.”

“The safety of our employees is our number one priority and to see that an officer tragically killed in these circumstances is really shocking,” police commissioner Dona Adams told reporters later on Monday.

“We know that the police can be risky, but we expect every officer to finish their shift and return home to their families.”

Police do not name the employee from respect for his family, as some family members have not yet been informed of his death, said G -Ja Adams.

She described it as a “real, reliable police officer” who has served the community for 25 years.

He was accompanied by a “senior and experienced sergeant” on Monday morning to “serve an approved court order to redirect home,” Ms. Adams said.

She added that the officer was shot as he made his way from his car to the front of the house. She also praised his colleague, who managed to call for help while “in a situation of danger and danger”.

Investigations to the incident are underway, said G -Ja Adams.

Police also said support was provided for the well -being of participants and affected.
