Anna Patterson has a single -storey career in the Silicon Valley. He founded three startups with search engine upstarts exfte and TabAs well as recall.archive.orgWhich became the Internet archive. He was the Vice President of Engineering Google and later started the gradient Ventures, an AI-centric seed fund. And she was not building.

Patterson told TechCrunch that he had to start something new a few years ago, but he was not sure he had started another. However, after the diagnosis of breast cancer in 2021 and after much of that year, he realized that he could either go back to his old life or start something new.

It is clear that he chose the next one: his new startup, Ceramic.EIt has been said that it provides Foundational AI training infrastructure that initiatives can use less GPU to train large language models using less GPU than “current sophisticated”. Ceramic has claimed that its model can use long context and work with any clusters and its goal is to help the models scale up to 100 times.

Patterson said that when he realized that the existing infrastructure for the construction of the LLM had many variables and was very complicated to accept the enterprise at the scale.

Patterson said “Whenever you are trying to extend an infrastructure 10x, it usually doesn’t work for a problem.” “But when you are trying to expand it, you know, 100x or more, you will often take one step back and revisit it. So, I thought myself, if it was something that we were going to last for the next 10 years, would I do it? “

The process of thinking was completed in Ceramic AI in January 2024, which was founded with Tom Costello, chief scientist of the Patterson Company. Startup has been working since then and already signed partners with AWS and Lambda – though it is not yet earning any. Patterson says he wanted to create credibility, awareness and trust with potential customers before focusing on sale.

The company recently collected a $ 12 million seed that was led by the NEA and saw the participation of IBM, Samsung Next and Earthshot Venture. Patterson said that because of the technical skills of the firm, the NEA round was a natural choice to lead. Funds will mainly be kept towards sale and continued development.

But after three startups, the senior role of a career and years as an investor, what is different now? Patterson says that since spending time on the other end of the table as a VC investor, his view on creating startups has changed. He thinks that he is now under pressure more time than he had created his first few companies.

“When I was a small building agencies, I felt it, I mean it is a kind of sadness, but I just felt this really comfortable time to run engineering, non-selling company,” he said. “Now, even after you have been a VC for several years, I certainly feel more stressed.”

He thinks that this is a good thing, though your product is better to be found in front of customers before and repeat.

This is probably relevant for ceramic because it is not the only company that initiatives help them to scale their foundational models.

One of its largest competitors AI togetherThe companies that help “turbocharge” their model buildings and have collected more than $ 530 million in Venture Capital. MosiacML Also aimed at the accelerated LLM building and collected $ 37 million in $ 1.3 billion before acquiring by the Databrix in 2023.

Now, if this fast dynamic market wants to create a place for yourself, the ceramic work has been cut off.
