Are Ford and GM Still American?

For decades, Ford and General Motors symbolize American art, blue-collar pride and heartland grit. Detroit Big Three-Ford, GM, and Chrysler (currently part of Stelantis) from Rugd Ford F-150 to All-American Chevi-Markin has dominated the auto market through the US-selling vehicles. Ford F -150 is a cultural symbol.

To many, the Detroit remains the heart of the US auto industry, a perception that was strengthened by the recent investments to conquer the electrical and autonomous vehicle market by billions of dollars. However, a new ranking calls the whole identity to the question.

Annual American -made index from Cars.comNow in the 20th year, it was just published and it gives a wonderful picture. The list of vehicles based on the percentage of the US factory jobs, manufacturing plants and domestic parts reveals this list that a car is really “American” and this year, the results are a PR nightmare for the old guard.

In the top 20 list affected by Tesla, the legacy American brands were not found anywhere. GM has only been able to put a vehicle, chevy colorado pickup, to number 19 below. There is no model at all in Ford’s top 20. Meanwhile, every single Tesla model except cybertrack has created a list, the model has taken the top 3 place. Even Stelantis Jeep saved his face with Gladiator and Rangler, both of them gathered in Ohio toland. Meanwhile, Japanese and Korean automakers, including Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Kia, were storing several models in American plants and placed strongly.

This rankings landed politically at a timely charge. President Donald J. Trump has launched a new trade war, recently imposed 25% tariff on all imported cars that effectively implemented on April 3. The administration has championed the philosophy of a “America First” manufacturing, yet the country’s most iconic automakers are producing less American cars than their foreign competitors by this metric.

When contacted by Gizmodo, remove both GM and Ford, instead of adding their investment and job -making numbers instead of addressing their weak display in their ranking.

“We have added about 5.5 jobs in the United States since the 20th,” said a Ford spokesman said that the company recruits automas every hour more than anyone else in the United States.

GM has pointed to the recent announcement so that he has a promise to invest $ 4 billion in its domestic plant. “We are committed to American production and expand production in the US,” a spokesman told Gizmodo.

Frankly, both companies are huge employers in the United States. By the end of 2021, GM appointed 90,000 people (56%of its global employees), and Ford appointed around 89,000 (52%of total). GM is still the largest automaker in the United States by market share.

However, the criteria of cars.com are more than just the assembly. It tests the source of engines and infections and the percentage of the US and Canadian parts. The website warns that “a model can only be created at the United States Assembly Plant means that it will not be made exclusively here.”

For those companies that have created their brands on the basis of American identity, their vehicles do not crack the top 15K. It suggests that in the globalized auto industry, the “American -made” label seems much more complicated than it seems.
