At least 24 people were killed and 47 wounded while protesting against Myanmar’s military government after a motorized ParaGlaider army released two bombs on the crowd, a government spokesman said in exile Burmes.
The military attacked Monday night as about 100 people gathered in Chaung U in Central Myanmar for a national holiday.
Thousands have been killed and millions have been displaced since 2021, when the army seized power, provoking a civil war with armed resistance groups and ethnic militias.
After losing control of more than half of the country, the army again reaches significant profits through a particularly bloody air strike campaign and heavy bombing.
The city, which was attacked on Monday, is in the sagas region, which was a key field for battle in the war. Large parts of it are under the control of volunteer militias created after the coup to combat military government or junta.
These groups, known as human defense forces (PDF), also manage the local administration. An employee of the local PDF told Burmese Burman that they received information about a potential attack in the air during Monday’s gathering.
They tried to stop the protest quickly, but the paramotors reached the stage earlier than expected, he said.
It all happened in seven minutes, he said. He says the explosion injured his leg, but some people near him were killed.
The locals said it was difficult to identify the bodies afterwards.
“The kids were completely torn,” another woman said who had helped to organize the event, told AFP News Agency. She was out of place, but attended the funerals on Tuesday and added that they were still “collecting parts of the body”.
In a statement on Tuesday, Amnesty International said the use of Junta by motorized paraliders for community attack was part of a “disturbing trend”.
BBC Burmese has recently announced that the junta is increasingly choosing paramotors against the background of a lack of aircraft and helicopters.
International sanctions over the last few years have made it difficult for the rulers of Myanmar to provide military equipment.
However, advanced drones and military technologies delivered from China and Russia have given a new advantage to the battlefield, according to analysts.
Joe Freeman, a Myanmar researcher at Amnesty International, said the attack “should serve as a terrible awakening that civilians in Myanmar need emergency protection.”
He also called on Asean, a regional block of Southeast Asia, which should be convened later this month, “increase the pressure on the junta and to review the approach that has failed the Myanmar people for almost five years.”
The apparel of candles on Monday was organized as a peaceful protest against the junta military set and the upcoming national elections. They also called for the release of political prisoners, including Aun San Sove, the democratically elected leader, who was overthrown in the coup and prisons.
Myanmar is planned to Conduct the General Election in DecemberHowever, the first vote after the coup of 2021. Critics say that the vote will not be free and fair and is aimed at perpetuating military government. Many opposition parties are prohibited and voting will probably take place in about half of the country because of the fighting.
