At least three people are dead in the village of Roidoso, New Mexico, after heavy rain caused a lightning flood.
Up to 8.8 cm (3.5 inches) rain fell, causing the Rudoso River to rise to the historical level. The flooders have already given up.
A man and two children were killed after being flooded down the stream, local officials confirmed on Tuesday night.
The spokesman of the village of Ruidoso Kerry Gladen told CBS Search and Rescue Crew are still out and a hot line has been created for people looking for missing family members.
The emergency crews in Ruidoso have carried out at least 50 water rescuers in the area, with residents being called to move to a higher place.
Three people have been treated for injuries at a local hospital, says G -Jia Gladen in a statement.
The footage of social media, filmed by local artist Caitlin Carpenter, showed that at least one house was swept away by water waters, with Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford unable to confirm how many homes were lost.
Speaking to a local radio station, Cronford said, “It became really ugly.”
ReutersThe NWS had warned that two “scars of burning” around Ruidoso were a high risk of flash flake, as the charred soil left by last year’s wild fires would be “so water charged as a sidewalk.”
Southern New Mexico was struck by fires in June 2024. Ruidoso was evacuated as two fires burned approximately 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) land on both sides of the village.
Two people were killed and hundreds of homes were destroyed.
The following reports say that the risk of lightning floods will be increased for at least two years due to the fires, and the likelihood of significant floods in the area is “drastically increased”.
