The United Kingdom will recognize the Palestinian state in September, unless Israel takes “significant steps to end the horrific situation in Gaza,” said Sir Kiir Starmer.
The prime minister said that Israel must meet other conditions, including agree to the cessation of the fire, to commit to a long -term sustainable peace, which provides a solution to two countries and to allow the United Nations to restart the delivery of help or the United Kingdom will take the step at the UN General Assembly in September.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this move “rewards Hamas’s monstrous terrorism.”
Earlier, the United Kingdom government said recognition should come at a time when it may have maximum impact as part of the peace process.
However, the prime minister is under increasing pressure – including his own MPs – to act more quickly.
Last week France too announced that it would formally recognize Palestinian state in September – The first of the G7 group of the largest countries in the world to do so.
By providing a press conference after an emergency cabinet meeting, Sir Keyer said he was now announcing the plan because of the “intolerable situation” in Gaza and worried that “the very opportunity to solve two countries is decreasing.”
He told reporters that the goal of the United Kingdom for “a secure secure Israel, along with a viable and sovereign Palestinian state,” was “under pressure as never before.”
The prime minister added that his “main goal” was to improve the situation on the spot in Gaza, including to ensure that the aid is entering.
Drawing the steps that the UK wanted to take the Israeli government, Sir Keyer also said it should be clear that there would be no annexes on the west coast.
The present Israeli government opposes the progress to a bilateral decision, so it is unlikely to agree to the conditions.
Meanwhile, Sir Cayer said Hamas should immediately release all hostages, register until the fire is stopped, disarmed, and accept that they would not play any role in the Gaza Government.
In response to a message that Netanyahu wrote on social media: “The jihadist state on the border of Israel today will threaten Britain tomorrow.
“Calm for jihadist terrorists always fail. This will also fail you. This will not happen.”
Asked if he knew the prime minister’s statement was coming, Donald Trump said the couple had never discussed it during their Monday meeting when the US president was in Scotland.
He told reporters, “You can do the case … that you reward Hamas if you do. And I don’t think they should be rewarded.”
The United States – along with many European nations – said it would only recognize the Palestinian state as part of the movements to the long -term resolution of the conflict.
Liberal Davis leader Sir Davi welcomed the government’s message as a “decisive step”, but called on the Prime Minister to immediately recognize the Palestinian state and take “far more big action to stop the Gaza’s humanitarian disaster”.
He added: “Instead of using recognition that should be held many months ago, as a negotiating chip, the Prime Minister must apply pressure to Israel, stopping weapons in full and applying sanctions against the Israeli cabinet.”
About 255 MPs have signed a letter calling for the government to immediately recognize a Palestinian state – including more than half of Labor MPs.
Labor MP Sarah Champion, who coordinates the letter, said he was “delighted and relieved” by the message.
“This will put political pressure on Israel and will clarify what is happening in Gaza, and the west coast is completely unacceptable,” she said.
“However, I am anxious, our recognition seems conditional to Israel’s actions.
“Israel is an occupier, and the recognition is about the self -determination of the Palestinian people. The two must be separate.”
Conservatives and Reform Britain said it was not the right time to take the step, claiming that it would reward Hamas for their attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenich said the recognition of the Palestinian state “would not return the hostages home, would not end the war and would not receive help in Gaza.”
“This is political posing at its least,” she added.
The announcement comes after a call between Sir Cayer and the leaders of France and Germany over the weekend, when Downing Street said plans were discussed on a sustainable route to a decision of two countries.
However, German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz said his government had no plans to recognize a Palestinian state in the near future, suggesting that it could be “one of the last steps on the way to the implementation of a two -country decision.”
Most countries – about 139 in total – officially recognize the Palestinian state.
Spain, Ireland and Norway You took the step last yearHoping to exert diplomatic pressure to secure the fire in the gas.
Currently, the Palestinian representatives have limited rights to participate in the activities of the UN, and the territory is recognized by various international organizations, including the Arab League.
Skeptics claim that recognition is largely a symbolic gesture, unless the issues of the guidance and the degree of the Palestinian state are discussed first.
While Sir Keyer made his message, Foreign Secretary David Lamie turned to a UN conference in New York aimed at reaching a decision by two countries to the conflict.
Lami told reporters that the United Kingdom has worked with Jordan to release 20 tonnes of assistance to gas in recent days, as he has also called for trucks for help to be allowed to enter the ground.
The UN agencies have identified the Gaza situation as a “mass starvation of man”, accusing Israel’s humanitarian crisis that controls the entry of all supplies into the territory.
Israel insisted that there were no restrictions on the supply of help and that there was no “hunger”.
