Mark Carney and the Liberal Party have asked for a remarkable victory in the Canadian elections – and it seems that she came with a great assist from Donald Trump.
The permanent meal of the US president of the northern neighbor of America and the mockery of turning it into the 51st state of the United States after returning to office in January coincided with a dramatic conversion to Fortune for the Party of the Left Center.
Carney is almost only focused on his neighbor and this was reflected in his speech to win. After warning that the US wants the land and resources of Canada, Karney said, “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. This will never happen.”
Until Trump’s return to power, the conservative party of Pierre Polyver conducted what looked like a high and overwhelming basis in polls preferably voters against the background of the overall dissatisfaction with the state of the Canadian economy and 10 years of liberal government with the then leader Jurastin Trudeau.
Over the past year, it has been devastating for current governments around the world, with parties throughout the political spectrum losing a playground or frank control – with the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, France and India among the most famous examples.
These Canadian general elections violated this trend as the liberals forced Trudeau to resign and chose a political outsider, a former head of England Carney’s bank as their leader.
He opposed what the party constantly characterized as the true threat Trump represented not only for his economy but also for the sovereignty of Canada itself.
Although Trump does not seem to have the same dislike of Carney, which he clearly held about Trudeau, his political and political interests, and those of Canada now seem destined to continue to diverge.
There are already indications that Canada views more to Europe as a reliable partner rather than as a Trump America – a move that will surely annoy the US leader.
Carney promised to quickly launch new trade negotiations with Trump in an attempt to abandon US tariffs for Canadian auto export, which will start on May 3.
The Canadian economy, which is strongly dependent on exports to the United States, is at significant risk if a full trade war broke out and Carney – an economist through training and veteran central banker – promised voters that he would do his best in order not to go to Canada in a recession.
Meanwhile, Trump threw himself into Canadian politics once more on Monday as the voters were throwing their ballots, again called the American-Canadian border “artificially drawn” and saying that the nation would be better as a “hidden” US state.
Carney ascended the political power quite suddenly, at a time when his country faces a generation of challenge from his neighbor for a superpower. Many world leaders are still working on how to deal with Donald Trump in their second term, but few will face this type of test.
No one should expect these liberals to thank you for the US leader – or Trump to soften his rhetoric, although he said last month he prefered a liberal prime minister. (He will continue to say that he really doesn’t care who he won.)
Instead, more of the same is the probable result – more refined in Canada joined the United States, more threats from a trade war, and more desire to throw long -standing ties and agreements with the northern part of America on doubt.
The irony, however, is that Trump’s ridiculous focus on Canada can deny him a northern neighbor, governed by, if not a related spirit, at least a politician more in accordance with his populist conservative priorities than liberal carnas.
While a polyver, a veteran politician, will never go wrong with the US businessman, turned into a president, they have some similarities to shrink the government, reduce taxes and haircut social services, want to promote the production of fossil fuels and dislike what they both make fun of as “woke up”.
A conservative victory in these elections would be considered by many – in America and around the world – as a new sign that Trump’s victory last year was more than a single American event. This would represent what many in Trump’s orbit likes to believe that it is a global movement to their brand of culturally conservative, anti -telitis, anti -immigration and predictive policies.
