Watch: Trump has put unjustified tariffs on Canada, says Mark Carney

Mark Carney’s victory in the race to inherit Justin Trudeau makes him not only the leader of the Liberal Party, but by default the next Canadian Prime Minister.

This is an exceptional result for a person with very little political experience. He has never been elected MP, let alone serve in a cabinet.

However, what Carney has – as a manager of the Canada bank during the global financial crisis and governor of the Bank of England during negotiations on Brexit – is a long experience in global finances during economic turbulence.

And in a moment like this, Carney claims that this may be invaluable.

Politics in this country is turned on its head as a result of what is happening south of the border, with US President Donald Trump beginning a trade war and threatening to turn Canada into the 51st state of America.

Turning to a crowd of liberal supporters after the result of the leadership competition was announced on Sunday night, Carney promised to face Trump’s threats because of Canada’s tariffs and claims.

“Canada never, never, will be part of America in any way, form or shape,” he said. “We didn’t ask for this match, but the Canadians are always ready when someone else releases the gloves.

“Americans don’t have to make a mistake,” he warned. “In trade, as in Hockey, Canada will win.”

He repeatedly refers to the US President by name and said his government would retain the vengeful tariffs until “America shows us respect.”

However, how he would translate his strong language into the stage in Ottawa in practical decisions of these challenges, however, the twins was far less clear.

Liberals can hope that the exit of Trudeau from the scene itself will help to clear the air.

Instead of the frequent fun of Trudo from Trump as a “weak” leader, they may dare to believe that Carney will at least be able to reset personal chemistry.

On the other hand, if he has to press hard in an attempt to win discounts, he will also risk the anger of a person who uses unpredictability as a political form of art?

Much of this will depend on how serious the US President is in his insistence that he wants to impose real economic pain from Canada and annex his territory.

And this is a difficult question to answer.

After Carney accepted the party nomination, I caught up with former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Cretien, who has been serving for a decade since 1993 and who took the stage earlier in the evening.

Did you think Trump was serious?

“You know, I don’t know,” he told me. “Do you know? Anyone know? I’m not a doctor or a psychiatrist. He changes his mind every two or three hours. So (for him) to be the leader of the free world, it’s concerned for everyone.”

While the threat from the United States dominates Canadian policy – Carney has identified the current situation as “dark days caused by a country we can no longer trust” – there are still internal political issues to focus on, not least for the general election.

After sworn as a Prime Minister in the coming days, Carney will have to decide whether to call Snap elections. If he does not, the opposition parties in parliament may be imposed later this month through a vote of insensitivity.

Before Trudeau says she is withdrawing, the Liberal Party is facing a selective forgetting.

In nine years in power, he would become a responsibility and lightning for public anger about increasing costs of living, despite record levels of government spending and national debt with ballooning.

The scene seems to have been set for the liberals to be swept away by the conservative party authorities under the leadership of the young, populist leader Pierre Polyver, who had turned Lambesting Trudeau into something like a sport.

Now, not only has he lost the advantage of a deeply unpopular opponent, his political style is at risk of appearing out of step. In the present environment, even free alignment in line with Trump’s policy is a potential responsibility with Canadian voters.

The Republican president, for his part, has recently said that the conservative leader of Canada is not enough Mag.

The Liberal Party suddenly has a sense of rejuvenation – the difference in public opinion studies with the Conservatives, once a bay, is narrowing dramatically. And you could feel the tangible feeling of optimism in the room on Sunday night.

Realizing the danger, Poilievre accused the liberals of “trying to lure the Canadians” to choose them for a fourth term. But his statement emphasized how Trump changed political messages on this side to the border.

“This is the same liberal team that increases taxes, housing costs and food prices, while Carney personally earns billions of dollars and thousands of jobs outside Canada to the United States,” Poiliev wrote.

“We need a new conservative government, which will put Canada first – for change.”

Trump’s election made Canada come together to round his flag and drive a former governor of the central bank – an archetype member of the country’s political elite – to the highest position in the land.

Conservatives can still lead to the ballot boxes, but for the first time in a long time, liberals believe that Carney again have a chance to fight.
