Chile has issued a tsunami warning and said that people should evacuate a coastal zone in the southern part of the country after a major earthquake.

The warning was issued for the remote Magalanes region on the southern peak of Chile.

It comes after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck 219 km (136 miles) off the coast of Ushuaia, Argentina on Friday at 13:58 local time, according to the geological survey of the United States.

In the region, afterfronts have been reported.

In a publication by X, Chilean President Gabriel Borich said: “We are calling for evacuation on the coastline throughout the Magalanes region.”

The Chile Disaster Agency advises residents to “act quietly and to follow the instructions of the authorities and the response teams.”

Local media reports that this is a precautionary measure, with residents being asked to evacuate in safe areas that are 30 m above sea level.
