The US Department of State rejected a statement from its website stating that Washington does not support Taiwan’s independence, a move that caused anger in China.
China said the revision “sends the wrong … signal to separatist forces that advocate for Taiwan’s independence” and asked the United States to “correct its mistakes”.
The information sheet of the Taiwan Relations Division, the name, included the phrase “We do not support Taiwan’s independence” -this was removed last week as part of what it was “routine” update.
A US spokesman was quoted that he remains engaged with “A China’s policy, It said, where we recognize and have official relationships with China, not Taiwan.
China sees a self -governed Taiwan as a province that will eventually be part of the country and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve it.
But many Taiwans consider themselves part of an individual nation, although most are in favor of maintaining a status quo where Taiwan neither declares independence from China nor unites with it.
In addition to missing the phrase, the FACT sheet, which was updated last Thursday, also says the US will support Taiwan’s membership in international organizations, “where applicable.”
Commenting on the changes, a spokesman for the American Institute in Taiwan, the US Embassy on the Island, told local media that the fact was “updated to inform the general public about unofficial relations (US) with Taiwan with Taiwan.”
“We have long stated that we are opposed to any one -sided changes in the status quo on both sides.”
On Sunday, Taiwan Lin Chia Lung Foreign Minister thanked the United States for what he called “positive, favorable words.”
But in his regular press conference on Monday, the Beijing Foreign Ministry struck this move, calling the revision a “serious regression” in the US position to Taiwan.
“This sends the wrong and serious signal to the separatist forces that are advocating for Taiwan’s independence and is another example of stubbornly the American stubbornly with its wrong policy of using Taiwan to contain China,” said Chinese spokesman Goo Jiakun.
“We urge the United States to immediately correct its mistakes (s) seriously adhere to China’s single principle.”
