Reporting, central to the famous Citizen Kane opening scene – widely considered one of the best films ever made – was auctioned for $ 14.75 million ($ 11 million).
Rosebud’s wooden sled, one in at least three known to have survived, has long been thought to have been lost until it was given to director Joe Dante in 1984, saving him from destruction.
He continued to use it as a reference to fans (known as the Easter egg) in films he directed, including Gremlins 2: The New Batch.
Now this is the second most expensive piece of memorials ever sold – a pair of Ruby slippers used in Wizard of Oz sold for $ 32 million (23.9 pounds) in December.
“Along with Ruby Flippers of Dorothy, Rosebud’s Sled by Citizen Kane is one of the most emblematic items in Hollywood history,” said Joe Madalena, Executive Vice President of Heritage Aucions, which held the action, the intelligent collector told his magazine.
The identity of the sled buyer was not revealed.
Other pinks made for the film have been sold in the past, including the legendary director Stephen Spielberg, who later donated it to the Los Angeles Museum of Cinema.
However, the version, sold on Thursday, has not been seen for many years until he found himself in Dante’s hands.
He told Heritage Aucions how he made film researchers in 1984 in the same studio that was previously owned by RKO Radio Pictures, which produced Citizen Kane.
Dante said crews were in place, clearing the storage areas when a worker who knew he liked harvest movies, asked if he wanted.
“I was surprised … since I’m a big fan of the movie, I said,” Yes, I’ll be glad to take it. “
“Citizen Kane may be the biggest movie ever made. Rosebud is the Lynch of History – the whole heart of the story and the focal point of the mysterious drama in Kane’s life.
“As a director to have the support that is such a vital element of the cinema treasure, it is particularly significant.”
