The Colombian presidential candidate has been shot three times – according to reports twice in the head – at an event in the campaign in the capital, Bogota.
The 39 -year -old Miguel Uribe Turbai was attacked as he turned to a small crowd in a park on Saturday. Police have arrested a 15-year-old suspect at the scene, local media say.
His wife Maria Claudia Tazona called on the nation to pray for his survival. “Miguel is currently fighting for his life. Let us ask God to guide the hands of the doctors who treat him,” she said.
The Centro Democratico Party of Uribe has condemned the attack, saying that it “threatens the life of a political leader … democracy and freedom in Colombia.”
The frames of the phone, shared online, seem to show the moment when he was shot in the head in the middle of a speech, which prompted the gathered to run into panic.
The paramedics said he was shot in the knee and twice in the head, AFP News Agency reported. He was air -lated at the Santa Fe clinic, where supporters gathered outside to hold a vigil.
The Gustavo President Gustavo President Gustavo said that he “categorically and forcibly” condemned the attack as “an act of violence not only against his personality but also against democracy.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also condemned the shooting as a “direct threat to democracy”.
Uribe announced his application for the presidential election next year in October.
He is from a prominent political family in Colombia, with ties to the Liberal Party of the country. His father was the leader of a union and a businessman.
His mother was Diana Turbai, a journalist who was killed in 1991 in an attempt to rescue after being abducted by the drug cartel Medellin, managed at that time by Pablo Escobar.
