Millions of people are thought to be without electricity in Chile after a major national power outage.

According to the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) is an affected area covering the bigger part of the country, including the capital, Santiago.

The exact scale of the interruption, which began early on Tuesday, is not yet known, but Senapred said it covers the regions of Arica and Parinikota north to Los Lagos to the south.

Reuters news agency also announced that the largest copper mine in the world, the escondida is free, citing a source close to the question.

In a publication of the X, the Santiago subway operator said his service was temporarily suspended due to the continued interruption of the power supply, with the stations being evacuated and closed.

Hands from the city have shown that passengers evacuate stations, as they go up, excluded escalators, while traffic alerts are also shown to not work.

There were also long queues for buses that were still flowing on the roads of the city.

Maria Angelica Roman, 45 years old, told the AFP news agency: “We were left to leave work because of the shortening of the power, but now I don’t know how we will go home because all the buses are full.”

Chile’s Interior Minister Carolina Toha also published on X to say that a meeting will be convened to discuss current measures to restore services.

Senapred added that electric companies in the affected area are investigating the error and trying to restart the services.
