South Africa President Cyril Ramafosa has put the police minister Szcen Machunun on an immediate “absence leave” after he was charged with links to organized crimes.
On Sunday live in a television speech to the nation, Ramafosa also announced that the judicial committee would investigate the allegations, which he believes undermines the Constitution and threatens national security.
He added that the law professor Firoz Kachalia was appointed a temporary police minister.
McKhuna denied any misconduct, saying in a statement that he “was ready to respond to the accusations” against him.
In his speech, the president said the allegations against Machun, who include interference with investigations into political killings and corruption within the law enforcement agencies, “called for an emergency and overall investigation.”
He said that the judicial committee, led by the country’s deputy chief judge, would consider all claims.
The Commission will also investigate current and former police officers, as well as members of the National Executive Director, Ramafosa said.
Ramafosa was under increasing public pressure to act quickly in the high profile case.
67 -year -old Machun is an influential figure in the African National Congress of Ramafosa (ANC).
Political analysts have suggested that it could run for a leadership position at the next AnC Election Conference in 2027.
In a statement, Machun said: “I welcome and respect the President’s decision and occupy my commitment to the process.
“Honor and honesty are the virtues I personally subscribe to and which we all have to make an effort to maintain.”
The first first announced publicly by kwazulu-natal provincial police boss nhlanhla mkhwanazi Last Sunday.
He claims that Machuna receives financial support from a supposedly corrupt businessman to fund his “political endeavors”.
The Mkhwanazi gene also describes in detail a sequence of events that he claims to have led to the “orchestrated” dissolution of a working group created in 2018 to investigate the murder of politicians, mainly in Kwazulu-Natal.
He said the team investigations have revealed relationships with people with a high profile – including politicians, police officers and businessmen involved in a drug union – and that is why the team is dissolved.
When he dissolved the unit earlier this year, Machuna said he did not add value to the province, although many cases remain unresolved.
According to the Mkhwanazi gene, a total of 121 cases were eliminated by the unit under the Minister’s Instruction and without the permission of its boss, the National Police Commissioner Gen Fanny Masemola.
“These cases of March cases have been sitting in the central office because without investigators. Five of these dooms have already had instructions for (effect) arrests,” said Gen Mkhwanazi.
He also claims that Machun has had relationships with a controversial businessman who “financially supports” the minister’s political career.
Vusimuzi Matlala had a lucrative contract with the police before being abruptly canceled when he was arrested for attempted murder in May. Gen Mkhwanazi shared copies of text messages and payment, which is said to be Matlala to prove this.
