Democratic MPs fled Texas in an attempt to stop voting on a new congress map that will favor Republicans.
The redistribution, discovered by the majority of Republicans in Texas last week and supported by President Donald Trump, will create five new Republican places in the House of US Representatives.
Two-thirds of the 150-member Texas legislator must be present in order to vote. Fifty -one democratic legislators have escaped, most of them in Illinois, refusing the Republicans the necessary quorum.
They said they were planning to stay away for two weeks until the end of a special legislative session convened by the Republican Governor of Texas Greg Abat.
The session is being carried out to approve redistribution, as well as to provide relief in disasters for the deadly floods in Texas from last month and to ban the THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.
Each of the 51 legislators can face a $ 500 fine (380 British pounds) for every day they are far away, and Texas General Prosecutor Ken Paxon, Republican, threatens to arrest them.
He said that at X, the state must “use every instrument he has to pursue those who think they are above the law.”
“The Democrats in the Texas House, who are trying to escape as cowards, must be found, arrested and returned to Capitol,” he writes.
In a Texas statement, the Democrats defended this move.
“We do not go to our responsibilities,” said state legislator and chairman of democratic Caucous Jean Wu.
“We go out on a falsified system that refuses to listen to the people we represent.”
While Democrats across the country threaten Tit-Tactics tactics, their capabilities can be limited.
In countries where they deal with the process of redistribution, such as Illinois, New Mexico and Nevada, the Democrats have already split as impatiently as the Republicans.
Illinois most card, for example, I received F class from the Gerimander Project in Princeton Because he was appreciated so politically unfair.
But in other countries controlled by Democrats, such as New York, California, Colorado and Washington, redistribution is processed by non -partisan, independent committees, not by state legislative authorities.
Currently, Texas Republicans occupy 25 of the 38 congress places in the country of Lone Star.
They hope that the new cards can increase this number to 30 – all in the constituencies that Trump won last November with at least 10 points.
Before the next year’s intermediate election, the redistribution of Texas can help reinforce the slender Republican majority in the American house, where Trump’s party currently has 219 out of 435 places, while Democrats own 212.
The new map will include a redistribution of the Rio Grande Valley and combines two areas in the capital of Austin, which is currently being held by the Democrats.
In the North Texas, the map will expand an area currently held by Democratic Congressman Julie Johnson to include the rural republican fortresses.
It will also rearrange four places in the Houston region, including one of the Democratic Congressman Al Green.
Texas legislator Todd Hunter, a Republican, who sponsors the card redirect measure, called it a “good Texas plan”.
This is the third time in the last few years that the Democrats have escaped Texas to refuse Republican quorum.
Party legislators went to Washington in 2021 in the end an unsuccessful attempt to block new election rules.
The Texas Democrats also left for Oklahoma in 2003 to stop redistributing that Republicans ultimately managed to be approved.
Countries usually undergo redistribution every 10 years when voting cards are redirected to account for changes in the population.
The US most census was in 2020. The redirect of regional lines in the middle of the decade is unusual.
