Denis Villenev, the Oscar-nominated French-Canadian director, will direct the next James Bond movie, Amazon MGM Studios announced.

Dune’s director said in a statement published by the studio that he was a “firm fan of James Bond” and intends to “honor the tradition” of the franchise.

Speculation revolves through the future of the 007 movies after long -standing bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael D Wilson retreated from their roles in February.

Villeneuve will also serve as the executive producer of the new film, receiving a global recognition for Dune’s franchise, as well as the Blade Runner 2049 and arrival.

Amazon did not hint at the next actor to play James Bond in the message after Daniel Craig gave way to the game of the most incarnation.

Villeneuve acknowledged the “Large Responsibility” to overcome the new movie and expressed its excitement from the challenge.

“I grew up watching James Bond movies with my father since Dr. Not with Sean Connery. I am a firm fan of Bond. For me he is a sacred territory,” he said.

“I intend to honor the tradition and to open the way to upcoming new missions.”

He added that he and his colleagues producers Amy Pascal and David Hayman – who accordingly watched the films about Spiderman and Harry Potter – were “excited to return (Bond) back to the screen.”

Amazon MGM Studios leader Mike Hopkins welcomes Villeneuve as a “cinematographic master” and praised his ability to deliver a “immersive story” to the global audience.

It remains unclear when the next Bond movie will come out, as the search for the next actor, who plays the titular spy.

British actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson and James Norton are rumored to be champions of the part, while the name of Irish actor Paul Mescal is also thrown into the mixture.

Villeneuve gained fame with a series of critical successes, including Sicario, prisoners and Incendies.

His arrival of science fiction in 2016 won him his first Oscar -wide nomination.

Most recently, the Blockbusters Dune and Dune: Part Two has collected a total of over $ 1 billion (£ 730 million) around the world, with both films nominated for the best of the Oscars in their respective years.

Villeneuve is expected to start filming Dune Messiah, the third Dune franchise movie, later this year, with a potential date of release in 2026.
