US President Donald Trump has announced new rates on all goods imported from the three largest trading partners in America, China, Mexico and Canada.
Trump said the United States will impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico and 10% for China. Canadian energy is facing a lower rate of 10%.
He threatened to impose import taxes if the three countries do not deal with his concerns about illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Together, the trio represented more than 40% of the US imports last year.
“Today’s tariff message is necessary for China, Mexico and Canada to be responsible for their promises to stop the flood of poisonous drugs in the United States,” a White House statement said on Saturday.
Trump publishes on his social platform for the truth: “This was done through the International Emergency Economic Forces (IEEPA) because of the main threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs that kill our citizens, including fentanyl.”
In practice, the tariff is an internal tax imposed on the goods when they enter the country, proportional to the value of the import.
China warned against protectionism as Trump’s return to the presidency renewed the threat of a trade war between the two largest economies in the world.
Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Ding Suxiang told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last month, his country is looking for a solution to “win a profit” for the tension trade and wants to expand its imports.
Canada and Mexico said they would respond to the US tariffs to their goods with their own measures, while striving to assure Washington that they were taking action to deal with concerns about their US borders.
In an attempt to avoid the full tariffs, Ottawa promised to implement $ 1.3 billion ($ 900 million; £ 700 million) new security measures along the US border.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will turn to the media on Saturday night.
The tariffs in Canada enter Tuesday on Tuesday.
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce released a statement before, which he called Trump’s “deeply disturbing solution” for tariffs.
Tariffs will have “immediate and direct consequences for Canadian and American livelihoods” and “will drastically increase the cost of everything for everyone,” the statement said.
Explaining why it is aimed at its best trading partners, the White House said the Mexican cartels were responsible for the trafficking in fentanyl, methamphetamine and other medicines.
It states that the tariffs for Canada will remain while “collaborating with the United States against drug traffickers and border security.”
Finally, it says that “China plays the central role in the fental crisis” with the export of the deadly synthetic analgesic.
