The torrential rains and floods have killed at least 33 people in Kinshasa – the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo – according to employees.

“The republic will not abandon you,” President Felix Tshiziekedes promised on Monday, saying he had convened a meeting of the government crisis.

Desperate residents try to escape from water waters by moving, swimming or paddling in home canoes.

The city is home to 17 million people And he sits on the Congo River, which is one of the largest in the world and extends across the country.

The flood is common – the river has recently reached its highest level in six decades.

Parts of the capital are predisposed to soil erosion and in recent years the Congoan president has warned that the climate crisis worsens the floodS

Many homes in West Kinshasa were swept away after flooding overnight from Friday on Saturday.

About half of the 26 districts of the city are generally affected, according to the mayor of the capital, who says that search and rescue teams have been sent.

The outskirts of the city, as well as some of its most overwhelming neighborhoods, are most affected.

“The water has reached a height of 1.5 meters. We just managed to save ourselves, the rest is trapped in our homes,” Christoph Bola, who lives in the Ndanu area, told the AFP agency.

Other locals have told reporters that they are angry with the authorities, accusing them that they are too slow to react and do not send enough help.

The floods have also left people through much of the Kinshasa, who are struggling with a shortage of water after the water purification pumps in the city have been flooded.

The most busy road of the city that connects the center to the international airport is impassable, as well as part of the highway that connects the capital to the main port of the country, Matadi.

At least one tributary leading to the Congo River – the N’Djili River – has burst its shores by catching many inhabitants there, said Deputy President Jackeman Shabani in a statement on Sunday.

It is claimed to be one of the more polluted rivers who say Congoan scientists contain high levels of faecal matter and other waste.

The maintenance of the sewage is bad in many areas of Kinshasa and there is little evidence of urban planning.

Last year, the government announced plans to deal with this long -standing problemS

Over the coming weeks, more heavy heavy pri in Kinshasa are expected, as well as in the eastern city of Goma, which was seized by the rebel forces early this year.

The National Meteorological Agency also warns heavy rains elsewhere, especially in the northern and northeastern part of the country.
