The Norway Court has sentenced a doctor to 21 years in prison for rape and sexual abuse over dozens of women in a case that shocked the Scandinavian country.
Former GP, Arne Bye, was convicted of 70 rapes and sexual assault. He was also convicted of 82 for abuse of his position as a doctor, Norwegian media reports.
Almost all crimes are committed during medical examinations that were conducted on his patients while he worked as a doctor in the small town of Frost – a tiny community of less than 3000 inhabitants, near the Trondheim on the West Coast of Norway.
Bye was also forbidden to practice medicine and convicted of paying compensation.
Warning: This story contains details that some may find disturbing.
The court discusses a prolonged charge, which includes allegations covering nearly two decades, related to 94 women, according to Norwegian media.
Bye pleaded guilty to some of the crimes, and he was also acquitted on a number of charges.
At the Tronheim court on Friday, Judge Espin Hawg said the case was “very serious” and described Bai’s actions as “absolutely unacceptable”.
“The defendant’s actions have happened on the spot and placement where people need to feel safe,” Judge Howg said. “His actions undermine public confidence in the health service as well as the doctors as a whole.”
The 55-year-old defendant stood on his feet, seemingly calm and motionless, as the maximum sentence was betrayed.
The courtroom was then asked to sit as it took more than an hour to read the decision.
Health authorities had first warned police of concern about bye in August 2022 and he was accused a year later.
Bai had secretly installed a camera in his office, Norwegian media reported. Police revealed the scale of his crimes after examining hundreds of hours of staff.
Dozens of women, according to reports between the ages of 14 and 67, have come forward from the small rural community. The most complaint since 2004, the most native of 2022.
Central to the case was the methods used for medical examinations.
For four months, the court heard details of non -compliant touches and inappropriate pelvic examinations conducted by Bye.
These acts constitute rape under the Norwegian law, which distinguishes between penetrating and non -secent rape.
It has also been shown that BYE used non -medical equipment as a deodorant, during these exams, without justification for it.
Protective attorneys sought a lower sentence than 17-18 years, as Bai pleaded guilty to raping 21 victims.
Prosecutors have told the public television operator NRK that they are satisfied with the sentence and will review the result before considering the complaints.
Bai’s lawyer also said it would take a while to read the sentence correctly before considering whether to appeal.
