Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo seek to cancel the immunity of former President Joseph Kabila of prosecution after being accused of supporting rebels in the East.

There was a “essential set of documents, testimony and material facts” connecting Kabil with the armed group M23, said Justice Minister Constanta Mutkamba on Wednesday.

Currently, M23 controls parts of mineral-rich east of the country after making significant progress earlier this year.

53 -year -old Kabila did not comment on the accusations, but in the past he denied any relationship with the rebels.

He led the Congo for 18 years after inheriting his father Laurent, who was shot dead in 2001. Joseph Kabila was only 29 years old at the time.

After he withdrew, he received the title “Life Senator”, which gives him legal immunity.

In order to pursue a legal case, the military prosecutor of D -C Congo asked the Senate to cancel this.

Last month, there were reports that Kabila had returned to the country – visiting the M23 -State Goma – after spending two years in South Africa.

But they were denied by his political party, the People’s Party for restoration and democracy.
