EPAFrench President Emmanuel Macron is to meet with Donald Trump in Washington later, the first meeting one between the couple after the US president re-enters the White House.
Macron said in Q&A on social media that he would warn Trump not to look weak to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This comes after the United States had direct conversations with Russia for the first time after the full -scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine.
He is also due to the presentation of European proposals for peace in Ukraine after the US president accused him of not “doing nothing” about it.
The meeting is held on the third anniversary of the full -scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine. Other European leaders were in Kyiv in displaying support.
On Thursday, Macron told an audience on social media that Trump also needs to think about how his interactions with Putin will appear in front of other world leaders.
“This is not you, this is not your trademark, not in interest. How then can you be credible in the face of China if you are weak in Putin’s face?” said Macron.
He added that he would strive to convince Trump that the interests of the US and Europe are brought to the consideration and that “if you let Russia take up Ukraine, it will be irresistible.”
This means that every peace transaction must be agreed with Ukrainians and Europeans around the table, Macron said.
A similar appeal to the Ego of the President of the United States is a conscious choice from Macron, who knows Trump from the first term of the latter by power, says Sebastien Mailard of the Chatham House brain Trust.
“Macron is trying to touch what can be more emotion than pure rational arguments,” said Mailard.
Trump wants to appear as a strong man who quickly received a peaceful deal, he said, so that Macron’s strategy “is to demonstrate to Trump how weak he will look like, he will not be the strong man who wants to be.”
“If it treats Putin too kindly, he will not be respected by China, Iran or other enemies.”
Wider, Macron’s visit is likely to be a part-time purchase operation for Europe and part of the fact mission, according to Mr Millard.
“This is a last chance mission because Europe feels that things are in a hurry – they are afraid that this can be done too quickly and badly,” said Maillard.
He added that the international community was “confused” by this “new axis of Putin-Trump” and that “Macron wants to understand what NATO’s future is.”
“So he is not surprised by the next speech or the next tweet,” added Maillard.
An adviser to Macron’s cabinet said the French president will also use the meeting to present “proposals for actions that reflect the conversions that have emerged,” AFP reported.
EPAThese conversions relate to a sudden change in Washington’s policy to directly engage Russia.
Within a month after the White House returned, Trump was Putin by phone and sent a delegation from US representatives to meet Russian colleagues in Saudi Arabia.
These conversations led to an agreement on the appointment of teams from both sides to begin negotiating at the end of the war.
Russia also said it would not accept peacekeeping forces from NATO countries in Ukraine according to any peace transaction, a proposal that was Ben, a day earlier at a meeting of European NATO members in Paris, settled quickly by Macron.
Macron’s meeting with Trump comes to his own visit to the United Kingdom Prime Minister Sir Kiir Starmer, which is to come on Thursday.
Like the French leader, Starmer is also accused by Trump for doing nothing to end the war. The UK leader also replied to Trump to call Zelenski “dictator”, saying he was a “democratically elected leader” of his country.
Both Macron and Starmer will strive to present a united front to convince him not to make decisions for Ukrainian and European security without including Europeans, said G -n Maillard.
