Leaders from France, Germany and Poland have traveled to Moldova to support the country’s accession to the EU and warn of the “relentless” efforts of Russia to undermine this ambition.
The visit comes when Moldova celebrates 34 years of independence from Moscow, declared as the Soviet Union fell apart.
But this is held a month before the critical parliamentary elections in which the pro -Russian elements of the EU government and the Moldovan government can win.
Out of European state leaders, the pro -Western president of Moldova Maya Sandu told his country that it proved that EU membership is not a “distant dream, but a project we work on” that is vital as a security guarantee.
“The ruthless war that Russia has paid against Ukraine shows us daily that Europe means freedom and peace, while Russia to Putin means war and death,” the president said.
Ukraine is close, right across the border.
Last year, Sano called a referendum to secure the purpose of EU membership in the Constitution. Vote “yes” closely wonS
Shortly after this vote, the president who went to Harvard and worked for the World Bank, Win a second term After a tense second round.
There were allegations of Russian intervention in evidence of everything – from widespread misinformation campaigns to paying money for votes, as our team found on the spot.
Today, German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz said it was because Moscow “is trying mercilessly to undermine freedom and prosperity in Moldova,” as Vladimir Putin is trying to bring him back to Russia.
In response, Sanu is focused on building strong relations with Europe.
In Chisinau, she exposed the red carpet for her guests, congratulating each of the leaders in turn before taking them on a red carpet lined by soldiers standing in white, complexly embroidered nose.
Inside, in front of the EU flags, President Emanuel Macron defined Moldova’s “clear and sovereign choice” and said he was there to convey a “message of solidarity and confidence” in this process from France.
Donald Tusk recalled how Poland’s own journey from Moscow’s shadow to the EU joining was littered with challenges, but it was worth the job. “You have chosen the right path,” said the Polish Prime Minister. “You have chosen peace, not war and we support your aspirations.”
Moldova has been a firm supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s full -scale invasion, fearing that his own land was also in Putin’s view. Today, Mertz said that Europe and the US “invest everything” try to end the war there.
“We want to see the weapons in Ukraine finally be silent … ideally today … but not at any price,” the Chancellor warned. “We don’t want to see Ukraine’s capitulation. Such a surrender would only buy time for Russia and Putin would use this to prepare the next war.”
President Sano’s party, Pas, hopes that the election next month will give him a new term to continue with the reforms and continue to approach Europe after the country has started official accession negotiations last year.
But polls suggest that PAS will lose places – and probably its majority in parliament.
That is why the president called the European cavalry about Independence Day: he wants to make Moldova’s path to EU membership as “irreversible”, as she claims.
