Monday meta announcement An update to Facebook Groups that will allow admins to make their previously private groups public without compromising the privacy of their existing members. The company said past content will remain private and member lists protected after the transition.
Often, admins start their groups as private, thinking they’ll stay small, but then realize they can reach a wider audience if they’re easier to find. This update will allow Facebook groups to expand their reach without having to start a public group from scratch or reveal their members’ past posts.
According to Meta, group privacy can be changed from Facebook’s settings page. When an administrator changes a private group’s status publicly, all other administrators are notified of the change and have a three-day window to review and cancel the change unless everyone agrees.

After the update, all past group content — including posts, comments, and responses — will be visible only to members who were in the group before the transition, as well as to admins and moderators. Member lists are also protected and only visible to administrators and moderators.
Members are also notified of the change, and will be reminded again the first time they post or comment in the new public group.
Once converted to public, new posts, comments, and responses will be visible to anyone, including those not on Facebook, just like any other public group. This can help make Facebook content more easily indexed by search engines like Google, which can then show these groups in their search results for related queries.
If admins decide that being a public group isn’t the right call, they can change the group back to private.
