A politician in Finland has died in the main building of the country’s parliament in the capital Helsinki.

It is believed that Emeli Peltonon, who was a Member of the Social Democratic Party, took his life in the building and was found on Tuesday morning, local media reported.

His sudden death shocked Finland, with politicians expressing their sadness.

“He was a very beloved member of our community and we will be missing deeply. Young life ended too early,” said in a statement Tytti Tuppuraen, chairman of the Social Democratic Parliamentary Group.

Although parliament is in the summer, all official political work was terminated by Prime Minister Petri Orpo for the rest of the day.

Orpo took a minute’s silence in honor of Peltonen, which, according to him, was very fond of colleagues, according to public operator Yle.

This was shared by parliamentary speaker Yussi Hala-Aho, who wrote on X that Peltonen was “a well-liked colleague who was respected by party lines.”

Police were called to Eduskuntatalo – the parliamentary building – at 11:06 (08:06 GMT) on Tuesday. They said he was not suspected a fake game.

Peltonen’s death was confirmed about three hours later in a short parliamentary statement, which said the community shared in the “grief of his relatives.”

Peltonon, who was the southern region of Wusima, was in his first term as a member of Parliament, elected in 2023.

His political ambitions began early – Peltonen was elected city advisor for the city of Jarvenpa only 18 years old.

When he was 22, he was elected chairman of the City Council – the youngest person holding the title, The media reported at that timeS

At the end of June, Peltonen published in his social media accounts that he was “far from very parliamentary work in recent weeks, as he had a” kidney problem “that led to infection.

In the publication, he explained that he was treated with “intravenous antibiotic treatment in Maylachti (Helsinki suburb), which takes time.”

“I am already discharged from a hospital, but because of the situation I am on summer sick leave and now I am fully focused on recovering from the disease,” he writes.
