Five Venezuelan political figures, stored at the Argentine Embassy in Caracas, to avoid arrest, have been submitted to the United States after a mission for “successful rescue,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“The United States welcomes the successful rescue of all hostages held by the Maduro regime in the Argentine Embassy in Caracas,” Rubio wrote in a publication by X. “After accurate operation, all hostages are already safe on the US soil.”
The Venezuelan forces surrounded the embassy last year, where five politicians opposed President Nicolas Maduro to convince himself.
Venezuela’s opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said she was grateful “to all who did possible.”
Machado welcomes their escape as “a flawless and epic operation for the freedom of five heroes.”
They were allowed to stay there by the government of Argentine President Javier Miley, whose country is among several who challenged the results of Venezuela’s last July election, which gave Maduro’s third term.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry thanked Rubio and the US government “for the successful operation that provided the freedom of asylum seekers in Venezuela at our Embassy in Caracas.”
Last year, opposition figures published images and videos of officers from the country’s intelligence service around the embassy complex, saying they were under “siege”.
They also accused the Venezuelan government of reducing the electricity and water services of the Union.
The Venezuelan government said at that time that it had been forced to take action after revealing evidence of “terrorist activities and murder attempts” against Maduro and his deputy.
In November, the United States called security operations outside the embassy a serious violation of international law.
“We require the Venezuelan regime to observe its international duties, to end these frightening actions, and to guarantee a safe transition to asylum seekers,” the US Embassy in Venezuela said at that time.
Rubio did not confirm the names of the rescued, but the five opposition members who sheltered at the Argentine Embassy are Magali honey, Pedro Urucurtu, Omar Gonzalez, Humberto Villalobos and Claudia Mcero.
It is unclear how the five managed to leave the Union and what role the United States played in their escape.
The embassy, which they were sheltered, were presented and guarded by Brazil after diplomatic relations between Argentina and Venezuela fell apart last summer due to the result of the Venezuela presidential election.
But in September, the Venezuelan government canceled Brazil’s arrest at the embassy in an obvious attempt to abolish its diplomatic defense.
