Ten prisoners, several of them, faced with murder accusations, fled the New Orleans prison and may have had help from staff at the facility, authorities say.
The prisoners are thought to have fled around midnight and were found to have disappeared during the number of 08:30 local time (13:30 GMT) at the Parish Prison in Orleans on Friday morning. One of the 10 was restored.
“There is no way anyone can get out of this facility without help,” Sheriff Susan Houston said during a press conference.
The Sheriff’s service publishes photos showing how prisoners escaped, which included mocking messages, apparently left by the escapes. “To easily lol,” says one message.

State police in Louisiana identified an Escapee as Kendall Miles in Central New Orleans through a person recognition technology after being filmed on an observation camera.
He tried to escape on foot before being detained to hide under a car in a parking garage, police said.
He was transported back to the parish prison in Orleans and “was rewritten to the facility for a new charge for a simple escape,” a message said.

The Service of the Orleans parish sheriff initially stated that 11 prisoners had escaped from the facility, but its number was revised to 10 later on Friday.
Sheriff Hutson said the prisoners had pulled the sliding door out of their cell from his prison from his tracks at 00:23 in the early hours of Friday morning (5:23 GMT).
They came out of prison about half an hour later, after pulling a toilet off the wall and breaking metal rods around a hole in the wall that was used for pipelines.
Then they went down the wall and ran through the highway, the sheriff said.

New Orleans police chief Anne Kirkpatrick said the prisoners’ escape was an “emergency and serious situation” and encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity.
The victims of some of the escapes have been notified, she said, adding that several were faced with murders and other allegations of violence.
The prisoners may have had help, Sup Kirkpatrick said, and it is unlikely to still wear uniforms in prison, warning that anyone who has helped prisoners will be accused.
The FBI and the US Marshal have also joined the local demand, she added.
The parish prison in Orleans is located near the city center, about 3 km (2 miles) from the famous French Quarter of the city.
