Former chief of Spain Football Federation Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of a sexual attack to kiss the player Jenny Hermos S
He was justified for coercion, for trying to press Hermos to say publicly that the kiss was consensus.
While Spain’s players received their medals after defeating England in Sydney to win the 2023 World Cup, Rubiales grabbed Hermoso’s head and kissed her on the lips.
The incident caused protests and calls for Rubiales’ resignation, who said he would appeal the sentence.
The decision also banned Rubiales from entering a radius of 200 meters from Hermos and to communicate with it for one year, said a court message.
Three of Rubiales’ former colleagues, who were also sued, accused of conspiracy in the alleged coercion – Jorge Vilda, World Cup coach, Ruben Rivera, former Federachin Epagol de Fufbol (RFEF) marketing manager, former marketing manager, and Albert Luke, a former sports director – were released from these accusations.
Prosecutors asked for a prison for Rubiales, who told a court last week that she was “absolutely sure” hermos to give her agreement before he kissed her.
He described the kiss as a “act of affection”, adding that the moment it was “something completely spontaneous”.
In her testimony earlier this month, Hermoso insisted that she had not given Rubiales permission and that the incident had “coloring one of the most saving days in my life”.
Rubiales was accused of sexual assault and trying to force Hermos to say that the kiss was consensus.
The incident witnessed millions of television viewers and an entire stadium after the Spanish women’s team won the 2023 World Cup.
The subsequent turmoil gave the speed of “I too” in the game of Spanish women, in which players sought to fight sexism and to achieve parity with their male peers.
Rubiales resigned in September 2023 after weeks of resistance to stand up and after FIFA stopped him and Spanish prosecutors opened an investigation.
