Former Brazilian President Jeir Bolsonaro has been accused by the country’s chief prosecutor in an attempt to coup after being defeated in the 2022 presidential election.
The 69-year-old received five allegations on the alleged offer to prevent President Louis Inasio Lula da Silva to take office after a bitter election race.
The prosecutor’s advice will already be considered by the Supreme Court. If accepted, Bolsonaro and 33 others will be officially charged and will have to face a lawsuit.
Bolsonaro denies misconduct and says he is a victim of political persecution.
He was banned from running for a service for eight years after being charged with undermining Brazilian democracy, claiming to be falsely claimed that the electronic ballots used in the October 2022 poll were vulnerable to hacking and fraud.

One of the charges is the crime of an “armed criminal organization”, allegedly led by Bolsonaro and his deputy chairman Walter Braga Neto.
“Allied with other persons, including civilians and military officials, they tried to prevent a coordinated manner, the result of the 2022 presidential election being implemented,” General Prosecutor Paulo Gonet Branko said in a statement.
The Brazilian media reported that the Supreme Court is expected to continue the process later this year.
The reaction to the prosecutor’s decision shows that divisions that have noted Brazilian policy for the last decade remain as deep as always.
Proponents of the government are celebrating and say that the former president belongs to prison while the opposition insists that he is innocent.
