Sly Stone, a fun-rock star, who leads the Sly and Family Stone group, has died at the age of 82, his family statement.
A statement said he had suffered a “prolonged battle” with COPD with pulmonary disease.
Stone, whose real name was Sylvester Stewart, grew up, singing the Gospel with his siblings and continued to play at the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969.
Along the way, Stone was a Radio DJ in San Francisco, before he and his group hit the big time with hits, including this is a family affair and if you want me to stay.
Stone was a giant of funk music known for mixing psychedelia, funk, rock and soul, his great style and even greater hair.

Stone married the model and actress Katie Silva (right) on June 5, 1974. Their wedding was far from the intimate: tens of thousands of fans wrapped the Madison Square Stadium in Manhattan to watch the couple tie the knot live. Later, they kept their acceptance to Waldorf-Astoria, where this shot was made.

Stone is occasionally played alone during periods of internal discord for the group in the 70s. After drug problems, the group later fell apart.

In 2006, the artist struck the Grammy stage in Los Angeles. He is remembered by his family as “a monumental figure, an innovative innovator and a true pioneer who redefines the landscape of pop, funk and rock music.”
