In Bucharest and London
EPARomanian far -right populist Kalin Georgesko lost his complaint against a decision that banned him from participating in May’s presidential election.
The Constitutional Court issued the final decision on Tuesday afternoon after discussing two hours.
A large crowd that gathered outside the court in Bucharest called “traitors” and “We have nowhere.”
The Central Election Bureau has earlier rejected Georgiscus’s candidacy for a repetition of the presidential election in May.
Georgesko won the first round of last year’s presidential vote, but he was canceled after intelligence revealed that Russia was involved in the creation of nearly 800 Tiktok accounts, supporting it.
On Sunday, the election bureau stated that Georgiscus’s candidacy did not “fulfill the conditions of legality” as he “violates the very obligation to protect democracy”.
Georgesko appealed this sentence the next day.
Many protesters out of court had a Romanian flags draped around their shoulders. Some kept Orthodox Christian icons and a big wooden crucifix was squeezing.
A man, dressed in a traditional peasant, scaled a lamp with a giant Romanian flag and removed it with enthusiasm over the crowd.
They chanted “Kalin George is president” and “freedom” and condemned the judges as traitors. A woman had a sign that was a “stop dictatorship”.
It took some time for the news of the decision, defending the ban on reaching the crowd. When it happened, strong “busses” were directed inside the judges.
EPAThe crowd soon became noisy and angry, saying they had gone out to protect democracy.
Kalin George, the man they support, has come from the ultimate right borders of Romanian politics, but is now in the forefront and promises to make Romania great again.
Many Romanians believe that it is blocked by a political elite who is corrupt and distant from humans.
George Simion, an ally of Georgesko and the leader of the far -right opposition Union for Romanians (Aur), wrote on Facebook: “Shame! It will not beat us. The people of Romania woke up. They will win.”
The presidential election was canceled after Georgesko won the first round in November 2024, when intelligence was released, which implied a giant Tiktok promotion campaign for Georgescu was supported by Russia.
For European leaders and many in Romania, Russia seemed to be trying to weaken Europe and undermine its liberal values.
This is still the opinion of many Romanians who are afraid of a person who admires Vladimir Putin and does not like NATO.
The Kremlin Press secretary Dmitry Peskov said the proposals that Russia had ties with Georgesko were “absolutely unfounded”.
Meanwhile, the crowd on the streets of Bucharest on Tuesday night was shouting about democracy and freedom. They wanted the right to vote for George and were denied.
Entering the evening, police lining the barricades were vigilant but calm.
None of the protesters seemed to know what to do or what they were waiting for, probably some instruction from Kalin Georgesko himself when he appeared on television.
