The University of Georgetown University researcher Badar Khan Suri has been released from the Texas Retention Center after being arrested as part of the Trump administration’s repression against colleges.
A federal judge ordered the release of G -n Suri, who was a doctorate at the prestigious institution in Washington in a student visa.
Indian citizen, he was arrested outside his home in Virginia on March 17 by immigration agents.
His attorneys tell him that he was directed “for speech in support of Palestinian rights and family relations with gas.” The US authorities accuse him of “spreading Hamas propaganda” and has “ties with a famous or suspected terrorist.”
The Ministry of Justice claims that the government has the right to detain it until the court proceedings have been completed.
US District Judge Patricia Toliver Jails ordered Wednesday, and his detention violated his right to freedom of expression and a proper process.
She denied the government’s allegations that he had ties to Hamas through his wife Mafez Saleh, a US citizen whose father is a government official in Gaza.
“There is no evidence presented to this court regarding the statements he made” in support of Hamas, “said the judge, according to the US partner of BBC CBS News.
Mr. Suri’s father-in-law is a former adviser to Hamas leader Ismail Hani, who was killed in July last year, The Washington Post and the New York Times reported.
In her judicial statementD -ja Saleh said her father had lived in the United States for nearly 20 years while studying. “He was then a political advisor to the Gaza Prime Minister and as a Gaza Foreign Affairs deputy,” she said.
G -ja Salech said he left the Gaza government in 2010 and set up the Institute for the Promotion of Peace and the resolution of conflicts in Gaza in 2011.
“The hearing of the judge’s words brought tears to my eyes,” said G -ja Saleh in a press release from the American Union for Civil Liberties (ACLU), which is involved in the defense of G -n Suri.
“I really want to be able to hug her heartfelt hug from me and from my three children, who will see their father for a long time,” she said.
“Talking about what is happening in Palestine is not a crime.”
The Trump administration is still striving to deport Suri in a separate production, ACLU said.
In recent weeks, several students and scientists have been investigated by US immigration officers, accusing them of intercession for “violence and terrorism.”
Among them was a graduate of the University of Colombia and a permanent resident of the United States Mahmoud Khalilwho was arrested on March 8 after being involved in propalist protests on the campus. He was accused of having relationships with Hamas, which he denied.
The release of Badar Khan Suri comes days after student at Tufts University Rumeysa Ozturk was released on bail after court order.
The Ozturk was held in detention of Louisiana after her employees arrested her on the street in Massachusetts in March and accused her of “engaging in support for Hamas”.
