Germany is set to tighten its laws to break up with gangs, smuggling migrants in the UK by the end of the year, Downing Street said.

The announcement comes with a new agreement between the United Kingdom and Germany covering areas, including migration, business and defense, which will be signed during the first official visit of Friedrich Mertz to the United Kingdom as a German Chancellor on Thursday.

The changes will make illegal in Germany to facilitate illegal migration to the United Kingdom.

Facilitating people who control people is not technically illegal in Germany at the moment if it is in a country outside the European Union – which after Brexit includes the United Kingdom.

Downing Street said this move would make it easier for German authorities to investigate and take action against warehouses and storage facilities used by smugglers to conceal small boats designed for the unlawful channel crossing to the United Kingdom.

Berlin agreed to tighten his legislation in December Under the previous government, but now the new chancellor is expected to be committed to changing the law by the end of the year.

Sir Keyer said: “Chancellor Merz’s commitment to make the necessary changes to German law to violate the supplies of dangerous ships that carry illegal migrants on the channel is extremely welcome.”

The German agreement comes a week after the United Kingdom announced a new scheme to return pilots with France, during the state visit of President Emanuel Macron.

According to the deal “One in, One Out”, some small arrival of a boat will be returned to France in exchange for the United Kingdom, which accepts an equivalent number of asylum seekers with connections with the United Kingdom.

Prime Minister Sir Kayer Starmer is under pressure to deal with the number of people crossing the channel in small boats.

More than 21,000 people have made the dangerous trip so far this year – an increase of 56% in the same period in 2024.

The interior secretary of the shade conservatives, Chris Philp, claims that the numbers show that “the channel crisis continues to stop.”

“It’s just more than the same tired, chasing the title by Kyar Starmer,” he said.

“He struggles to stay up -to -date with another trick, but this last press message is not a plan but a distraction …

“This government has obviously lost control of our borders and left the country to be exposed when it cancels our return on returns.”

Defense and security are also on the agenda for the visit, with leaders being designated to discuss support for Ukraine.

The couple will open a new agreement to increase the export of defense to the United Kingdom as armored vehicles and typhoons through joint export campaigns for co -produced equipment.

Downing Street said the agreement would probably lead to billions of pounds additional defense exports in the coming years, strengthening the economy and jobs.

The cooperation agreement will also set up a new business forum in the UK Germany to facilitate investment in both countries.

A series of commercial investment in the UK is announced that they coincide with the visit worth over £ 200 million and the creation of more than 600 new jobs.

Among the participating companies are the Stark Technology Company, which will create 100 jobs through a new facility in Swindon – noting the company’s first expansion outside Germany.
