GM recycling is sending new and old EV batteries to redwood materials, which then rebuilt the packs for stationary energy storage storage, two companies announced today.
GM’s second-life battery has already entered the Redwood process and at the Nevada headquarters, the company’s Sparks has entered the 12 MW microgrid. From that installation, the electricity flows to a nearly 2,000 GPU data center owned by Cruso.
Part New energy saving department It was launched publicly in June and EV batteries focused on rebuilding for grid-scale energy storage. Through the test, the company has discovered that many cells that come to its advantages still kept a very good life in them.
Instead of recycling the embedded materials, the company kept the packs intact, then attaching to create a large energy storage system that can store excess electricity, often for use after solar and air. The batteries of the Cruso project are fed by solar panels.
Redwood co-founder and CEO JB Stubbell said at the time, “I think it is likely to increase faster than the main recycling business.” Redwood has already recovered about 70% of the used or canceled batteries in the United States, planning to set up 20 gigawatt-hours energy storage by 2028.
Redwood is not the only company that follows that playbook, though the ability to integrate different types of packs from different manufacturers and chemistry – it can give an edge on the competitors.
Both GM and Redwood have an existing agreement, but the new cooperation identifies an expansion.

A significant detail: GM’s Redwood is interested in providing new battery, not just old, it gives a hedge against unequal growth in EV sales. The new sales of this year have declined by 6.3% of the second quarter of this year, Accordingly To the Cox Automotive, though they are expected to increase the tax credit periodically in phases of September 30.
Has been saved on the other hand Increasing In recent years. New installations have recorded 57% more over the years in the first quarter of this year.
