An investigation has begun after Grandpa mistakenly took home the wrong child from a children’s center in Sydney, Australia.
The man arrived to gather his grandchild from the Academy of First Step in the southern suburb of Bangor on Monday afternoon.
But he accidentally took another child who sleeps in a dark room.
The mistake only became clear when the mother of the child arrived in the center to find that her one -year -old was not there, Sydney Morning Herald reported.
“I can’t explain the feeling,” she told the newspaper.
“They couldn’t tell me (the human) name, they couldn’t tell me who it was, they couldn’t tell me who was intended to take. They couldn’t tell me what it looked like, except that he was wearing shorts and he was a more gentleman,” explained the mother, who wanted not to be baptized.
As part of the safety protocols, children’s care centers do not allow children to be collected by anyone other than recognized parents, guardians or care.
But she also said Grandpa was not guilty.
“We are not angry with him. We are not upset by him – we blame kindergartens.”
Grandpa’s wife told Sydney Morning Herald that her husband was “devastated” and “possessed the mistake”.
“When he realized that he rushed this child so quickly,” she said.
The first steps told the BBC that the worker involved in the incident had stood.
“We sincerely apologize to the families directly involved in this deeply upset and isolated incident,” said the director of the nursery Trisha Hasti.
She added that it has never happened before any of the nurseries of the first steps, which have since strengthened the procedures to “ensure that this never happens again.”
An investigation into “deeply concerned and serious incidents is underway,” said the regulatory authority for education and care for the early childhood in South Wales.
The incident comes at a time of increased awareness of safety in children’s centers in Australia, and last month new legislative changes were announced aimed at improving safety standards in the sector.
