Greenland’s new Prime Minister said the island is not a “property that can be bought”, in response to Donald Trump’s repeated calls to the United States to take control of the autonomous Danish territory.

On a visit to Copenhagen on Sunday, Jens-Frederick Nielsen said Greenland and Denmark should stand together in front of the “disrespectful” American rhetoric.

He spoke with the Danish Prime Minister Met Fredericksen in what was seen as another show of unity between the two leaders.

In an additional symbolic gesture, Nielsen must return to Greenland on Monday with the King of Denmark Frederick, who will begin his four -day royal visit to the island.

“We will never be the property that can be bought by anyone. This is the message I think is most important to understand,” said Nielsen, who became Greenland Prime Minister this April.

He added that Greenland and Denmark should approach closer to the light of the new foreign policy situation.

Trump has caused outrage in both Denmark and Greenland that he repeatedly says that he wants to bring the Arctic island under the control of the United States.

During a speech to Congress in March, Trump said control on Greenland was essential “for national security and international security”.

He sailed the idea of buying the island and had previously refused to rule out the use of military force, although US Vice President JD Vance said last month: “We do not think military force will ever be needed.”

Despite his criticism of Trump’s words, Nielsen and Fredericksen said on Sunday they said they would be ready to meet the US President for talks.

Nielsen also reiterated that Greenland is ready to deepen connections with the United States, saying: “We are ready for a strong partnership and more development, but we want respect.”

Nielsen’s visit to Denmark follows Fredericksen’s own trip to Greenland earlier this monthS

“You can’t annex other countries,” was her message to the US president at the time.

This was followed by Vance Vortex visit to the territoryWidely criticized in both Denmark and Greenland, in which he repeated Trump’s ambitions and said Copenhagen “did not do a good job” for Greenland.

Greenland, the largest island in the world, has been controlled by Denmark for about 300 years. The island rules its own interior, but Copenhagen decisions are made for foreign and defense policy.

The US has long been interested in security to the island. It has a military base there since World War II, and Trump may also be interested in the rare earthly minerals that could be extracted.

The polls show that the bigger part of Greenland wants to become independent of Denmark, but do not want to become part of the United States.

Formed in March, the new Greenland coalition government is governed by the central right of Niesen’s Detmocrats, which favors a gradual approach to independence.
