Witnesses said four armed men arrived at motorcycles, stormed the rural hall and opened fire for the mayor, Lilia Gema Garcia Soto and a local employee who was at a meeting with her, Eli Garcia Ramirez.

Two municipal police officers were also injured in the attack.

While officials are still investigating the possible motive for the murder, local officials are often directed by criminal gangs for not having a bidding.

Garcia Soto is the second mayor killed in Oaksaka this year. In May, Santiago Mayor Amoltepek was fired with two other people who were in the car with him during the attack.

The Oakakac governor condemned this last murder and added that the crime would not go unpunished.

However, the security forces are still looking for the four artillerymen who fled after the attack.

The State Prosecutor’s Office said the federal agents were located in the area to help them find them.
