Israeli Defense Minister Israel Kat Congratulated the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) and Israel’s Security Agency, Shin Beth, for the “flawless performance” in the publication of X.
He did not give details of the time or location of the operation, but earlier his IDF plane attacked a “key terrorist” in the Al-Rimal neighborhood on Saturday, causing reports in Israeli media that Obeida is the goal.
Hamas did not confirm his death. The Palestinian Armed Group earlier said dozens of civilians were killed and injured in Israeli strikes on a residential building in the area.
Katz warned on Sunday that much more than Obeida’s “criminal partners” would be aimed at “Gaza’s Campaign Intensification” – a reference to a recently approved Israeli plan to conquer control over Gaza.
A separate bet on IDF and Shin offered more details about strikes on Saturdays aimed at Hamas spokesman.
They said in a joint statement that the operation was “possible due to pre -intelligence collected by (shin bet) and a Directorate for IDF intelligence”, which identified his hiding place.
Five rockets struck the second and third floors of the six -storey residential building at the same time from two different directions.
The target apartment was used as a dentist surgery. Witnesses reported hundreds of thousands of dollars flying in the air because of the strike, with large sums stolen and later recovered by Hamas members.
Obeida was among the few remained senior Hamas military wing members of his deadly attack on October 7, 2023 against South Israel.
The joint statement said that Obeida “served as a public face to the Hamas terrorist organization” and “distributed Hamas Propaganda”.
In the last few years, Obeida – which is thought to be about 40 years old – has delivered a number of long diatri against Israel on behalf of the Hamas military wing, the Al -Kasam brigades.
Always masked in a Palestinian scarf, he becomes an idol for Hamas supporters across the Middle East.
In what his last speech may be on Friday, Obeida said the fate of the remaining Israeli hostages would be the same as that of Hamas’s fighters, warning Israel against his planned invasion of Gaza.
EPAOn Saturday, Hamas accused IDF of hitting a residential building in the densely populated Al-Rimal neighborhood in Gaza.
Local journalists reported that at least seven people had been killed and 20 were injured in strikes, with children among the victims.
IDF said that before the attack, “many steps have been taken to reduce the likelihood of damaging civilians, including the use of precision weapons, air observations and additional information on intelligence.”
BBC News is not able to independently verify IDF or Hamas claims.
In early August, Israel’s security cabinet approved a plan to seize Gaza’s control in a new offensive, with a target being completed with the 22-month war.
The UN has repeatedly warned that complete military absorption would risk “catastrophic consequences” for the Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages held in Gaza. The UK ambassador to Israel said it would be a “huge mistake”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu swore to defeat Hamas and denied international criticism of his plans to expand the war.
Israel’s military operation in Gaza began in response to an attack led by Hamas on October 7, with about 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken hostage. Since then, more than 63,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gamas Gaza Health Ministry.
While the operation to capture the city of Gaza has not yet started seriously, the Israeli attacks on the city – where nearly a million people live – continue.
The Israeli military said they were planning to evacuate the entire population of Gaza and move it to shelters to the south before the troops moved. The greater part of the Gaza population has already been displaced many times during the conflict.
More than 90% of homes in the city are evaluated to be damaged or destroyed, and health, water, sanitary and hygiene systems have collapsed.
Last week, Hunger conditions were confirmed in Gaza and its surrounding areas for the first time.
