NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have been left at the International Space Station (ISS) for nine months after the Boeing Starliner capsule, which carried them there, came across mistakes.

On March 14, SpaceX launched a rocket carrying a new crew to the ISS as part of a plan to return astronauts to Earth.

Suni and Butch should start their journey back on the ground two days after the new crew arrives, but Earth conditions may delay the return.

BBC’s Aruna Iyengar explains how astronauts ended up in the ISS for nine months.
