Hundreds of cars were left with flat tires after a truck traveling on one of the busiest highways in Australia, spilled 750 kg (1.653 pounds) sharp metal pieces on the road.

The truck was traveling 30 km (18 miles) before the metal scrap was opened, authorities said.

The incident forces the canvases bound by the city to close for hours on Friday, with debris damaging the tires of at least 300 cars.

Some emergency vehicles have also cut their tires, a rural fire service said in New South Wales.

“A truck lost a scrap metal around 5am, causing extensive debris,” the fire service said.

State police in New South Wales said the incident happened on the M1 Pacific highway near Narima, north of Sydney. The segment of the highway opened again on Friday afternoon after it was closed for 10 hours.

NJ Ashton, the company that owns the truck, apologized and said it was helping to clean.

Authorities use magnets to attract metal.

“It’s not just a case to take out a passenger or boys and girls with brooms. We use some magnetic devices. We remove the built -in metal in the highway itself. It takes a long time,” State Highway Commander Howard Collins told a press conference.

The M1 is a route of loads and travel that moves north of Sydney.

State Minister Jenny Aichison said the situation was “unprecedented”.

“We work with all the resources of the government and the private sector to carry out cleaning,” she said.

“It’s like trying to turn the highway. It’s very difficult.”

The truck driver, a 46-year-old man, is collaborating with investigations, police said.

“We take full responsibility for what happened and we are very sorry for all the damage and interruptions that are caused,” NJ Ashton said in a statement on his website.

“We still don’t fully understand how this happened.”

Collins said the truck had traveled over 30 km (18.64 miles), with debris falling from the rear of the vehicle before the spill was found.
