Hi, thank you for reading TechCrunch. We would like to talk about something important to you.
We have discovered that scammers are creating a disguise of TechCrunch journalists and event leadership and reached the agencies, pretending to be our employees when they are not at all. These bad actors are using our names and fame to try to dup involuntary businesses. It makes us mad and encourages us on your behalf.
Poorly, it is not just happening to us; The fraudsters are using the Trust that comes with the news brands established with the company through the media industry to get their feet at the door.
Here is an example of the most common scheme we track: duplicates of our journalists in disguise to collect sensitive business information from useless goals. In many cases, we know that scammers have taken the identity of the actual staff members, what the standard media investigated about a company’s products has been made and requested to call for an inauguration.
The sharp eye recipients sometimes catch the significance in email addresses that do not match our original staff certificates. However, these schemes develop quickly; Bad actors refine their strategies, duplicate journalists’ writing style, and refers to startup trends to make their pitch growth. Equally worrying: Victims who agree to the phone interviews tell us that the fraudsters use these calls to dig for more owned details.
Why are they doing it? We don’t know, though a reasonable estimate is a group that is looking for initial access to a network.
What to do about it, if someone is claiming from TechCrunch, and you have little doubt about whether they are valid, please do not just accept them for it. We have made it easy for you to verify.

Start by checking us Staff pageThe The fastest way to see if the person you contact actually work here. If the person’s name is not in our roster, you’ve got your answer right there.
If you see someone’s name on our staff page, our employee’s job details are not square with the request you are getting (ie, a TechCrunch copy editor is suddenly very interested in learning about your business!), A bad actor wants to agree to you.
If it seems like a valid request you want to make sure you want to be confirmed twice, you should just contact and just ask (how you can learn how every author, editor, sales executive, marketing guru and our BIOS can learn to reach the event team members).
We know that media searches have to be double-checing is disappointing, but these groups are counting on you not taking that additional action. You are not just protecting your own company by being aware of verification – you are helping legitimate journalists to protect their confidence depending on their work.
Thank you
