Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become one of the few world leaders who have joined the Truth Social, the social media platform owned by US President Donald Trump.
In his first post on Monday, Modi shared a photo with Trump taken in Houston, Texas, during his visit to the United States in 2019 and said he was “pleased” to be on the platform.
Trump launched the Truth Social in February 2022 after losing the presidential election for Joe Biden and was temporarily banned from major social networks such as Twitter and Facebook, which accused him of inciting violence.
At 03:30 GMT, Modi had 21,500 followers and followed Trump and US Vice President JD Vance.
On Monday, Trump shared a relationship with an interview that Modi made with the podcare Lex Friedman, where the Indian prime minister had been talking about a number of topics, including his life, the Gujarat riots since 2002 and the India’s relationship with China.
Much of Social’s functionality is identical to X before Twitter. Users are able to publish “truths” or “recur” as well as send direct messages. Ads on the platform are called “sponsored truths”.
Truth Social is the property of Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG). Trump took the company’s audience in March 2024 and now owns about 57% shares in the company.
The Kuwaiti investment company headquartered in ARC Global Investments and some former apprentice competitors also have significant bets, although these participations are currently the subject of legal battles.
The US President has 9.28 million Truth Social followers, much less than 87 million he has at X.
According to data made up of Bloomberg, traffic in Truth Social remains insignificant to its competitors, with its common user numbers behind X to 400 times.
TMTG reported losses of $ 400 million (£ 308 million) in 2024 and revenue of $ 3.6 million. It has a market valuation of $ 4.45 billion.
