The UK and Iran called their envoys after three Iranians were accused of spying in the UK.
Three Iranian men were arrested on May 3 and appeared in court in London on Saturday on charges of spying on the Islamic Republic.
Iranian news agency IRNA said the British prosecution d’Fafaire was asked Sunday to explain what he was saying was “unjustified” and “politically motivated” arrests. The United Kingdom then answered Monday, calling on Tehran’s ambassador to the UK.
Interior Secretary Yvet Cooper said the United Kingdom “would not tolerate the growing state threats to the UK’s soil.”
“I can confirm that Iranian ambassador is also summoned (Foreign Secretary David Lamy) rises with the Iranian foreign minister in the strongest conditions, that the United Kingdom will not accept any activity of the Iranian State Threat in the UK,” she said in parliament on Monday.
She added that the government would prepare new powers to propose to cover state threats.
She said that they would create power “stronger than the current powers of the National Security Act, allowing us to restrict the activities and activities of foreign state organizations in the UK.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government “it is clear that the protection of national security remains our top priority and Iran should be responsible for its actions.”
“The summons (ambassador) follows the message of this weekend stating that three Iranian citizens have been accused of involvement in behavior that is likely to help a foreign intelligence service,” he adds.
The alleged spying took place from August 2024 to February 2025, according to Sofia police.
Police have identified suspects like Mostafa Sepahwand, 39 years old, Farhad Yavadi Manesh, 44 -year -old, and Shapur Kaleha Hani Nori, 55 -year -old, all live in London.
A fourth man was arrested on May 9 as part of the investigation, but was released without charge, Met said.
The three men who were accused had arrived in the UK between 2016 and 2022 received temporary leave to stay after seeking asylum.
It is alleged that they have supervised the finding of journalists related to Iran International, which creates a coverage that is critical of this regime in Iran. It is prescribed in Iran as a terrorist organization.
Interior Secretary Cooper said allegations against Iranian citizens came with a “series of serious broader problems”, including “increasing number of Iran related soil operations of the UK” and “nearly 50% for a year” increase in MI5 state threat investigations.
“The Iranian regime is an unacceptable threat to our internal security, which cannot continue,” she said.
Five other Iranian men were also arrested on May 5 in London, Swindon, Stockport, Rochdale and Manchester as part of a separate terrorism investigation.
Four of the men who were held suspicious of the preparation of a terrorist act – were released from custody, although the investigation “remains active and continues,” police said.
The fifth man was earlier saved by an unspecified date in May.
